Editorial Standards

How we source, verify, and maintain the legal information on SquareLease.

Our commitment

Tenants and landlords make real decisions based on what they find here — whether to dispute a bond deduction, how much notice to give, whether a rent increase is legal. Getting it wrong costs people money and causes real harm. We take that seriously.

Our content is sourced from official primary sources and updated when laws change. It is not legal advice, but it should be accurate, complete, and traceable back to the source legislation.

Editorial principles

Official sources only

Every piece of legal information on SquareLease traces back to a primary source: state and territory legislation, AustLII tribunal decisions, or official government guidance from state tenancy authorities. We do not rely on secondary commentary, legal blogs, or unverified summaries.

Updated when laws change

Australian tenancy law changes frequently — sometimes with very short notice. We monitor legislative feeds, state government announcements, and tribunal bulletins for all eight states and territories. When a change is identified, affected content is flagged for review and updated before the law takes effect where possible.

Plain English without loss of accuracy

We translate legal language into plain English — but we do not simplify to the point of inaccuracy. Where a rule has exceptions or jurisdiction-specific variations, we include them. We would rather give you a complete, slightly longer answer than a simple one that misleads.

Corrections

If you find an error, please tell us at support@squarelease.com.au. We take corrections seriously. Significant errors are corrected as a priority and noted in the relevant guide. We do not quietly edit content to conceal past errors.

Independence

SquareLease is an independent platform. We do not represent tenants, landlords, real estate agents, or any industry body. We represent the law as it actually is. We do not receive commercial referral fees that would affect our editorial output.

AI-generated content

SquareLease uses AI to answer user questions and to assist with generating guide drafts. All AI-generated answers cite the source legislation or document they draw from. Guides are reviewed editorially before publication.

AI-generated content can contain errors. We make this clear at the point of use, and we encourage users to verify AI answers against the cited sources. We never present AI-generated content as legal advice.

How to report an error

If you believe a guide, calculator result, or AI answer contains an error, please tell us. Include the URL of the page, the specific statement you believe is incorrect, and a reference to the source you believe is correct (e.g., the relevant section of the Act).

Contact us at support@squarelease.com.au with the subject line “Content correction”. We will respond within 5 business days and publish a correction if the error is confirmed.
